    Jelena Tomašević Facts

  • A child prodigy, Jelena had started singing from a very early age and had won the first prize at the Šarenijada children’s music festival in the town of Kragujevac, when she was just 8 years old. When she was 11, she had given the winning performance at the Yugoslav Children’s Festival.
  • She gained further recognition when she had joined the Abrašević Folklore Ensemble, a highly popular and successful Serbian ethnic music group. While performing with them, in 1996, she had won the ‘Best Soloist’ award at the Serbian Folklore Festival.
  • Her big breakthrough came in 2003 when she finished as a runner-up at the renowned Slavjanski Bazar music festival in Belarus. The same year, she had also performed at the renowned Budva Festival.
  • Before being the winning entry at the 2008 edition of the annual Beovizija music festival which had helped her gain entry to the Eurovision Song Contest that year, she had also participated and won in 2005. At that time, though, it was the Evropesma pop song contest that was used to select the national entry for Eurovision. She had sung a song titled Jutro at the competition which was being considered among the favorites to win as it had already won at Beovizija. However, she had missed out controversially at the overall final where all 4 Montenegrin members of the jury had overlooked her performance while awarding points. This eventually turned out to be the last time that a united Serbia and Montenegro competed at Eurovision.
