Lil Nas X Sued By The Music Force For Song Carry On A 1980s Bobby Caldwell Song

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Lil Nas X is now facing a lawsuit for his track, “Carry On,” which the complainants believe violates their rights regarding another song of the same name. The publisher wants $25 million for copyright infringement.

As it was previously reported, the 20-year-old singer-songwriter’s song, “Old Town Road,” was on top of the charts all summer long. It features a sample from the Nine Inch Nails track, “34 Ghosts IV,” and he apparently bought it for $30 after negotiating.

Reported by Rolling Stone, the Dutch teenager who created the song, YoungKio, didn’t actually clear the sample with Bobby Caldwell, the writer of the 1983 track. Consequently, The Music Force is suing the star as well as his label, Sony Music, for the track, “Carry On.”

The Music Force wants the court to determine that Lil Nas X’s “Carry On,” is technically a collaborative effort on account of the uncleared sample. Moreover, they want $10 million in damages to “remedy the confusion in the marketplace.”

Furthermore, the label is asking for another $15 million in punitive damages, for a total of $25 million. As it was previously reported, this past summer, Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” went to the top of the charts after previously being taken off of them on account of it not being “country enough.”

However, Billy Ray Cyrus got on board and remixed the song with the 20-year-old rising star. Billboard put the track back on the Country charts as well as in hip-hop and the Hot 100. Moreover, following the rapper’s success in the music industry, he allegedly insinuated he was gay on his social media.

Other rappers, entertainers, and key figures of the hip-hop and black community came out and expressed support to the 20-year-old. Irv Gotti, a fellow artist, said that he was happy to hear Lil Nas X came out of the closet.

He stated there might’ve been a time when such a revelation and declaration proved deleterious to one’s career, however, things have changed a lot in the last twenty years.
