Restaurant apologises for racial slur on customer's bill

A London restaurant has suspended a member of staff and apologised after a racial slur was apparently printed on a customer's bill.

A group of women dining in The Happenstance on Ludgate Hill, London, complained that they had found a message reading "no ice ni--a" when they were given their bill.

The image was quickly shared across Facebook and Twitter, provoking a barrage of criticism.

Drake and Morgan, the group which owns the restaurant, has apologised for the incident and confirmed a member of staff has been suspended pending an investigation.

The waiter is now suspended pending full disciplinary. His behaviour is unacceptable. We apologise profusely https://t.co/Er6Q78iuok

The incident came to light when Jehan, from London, shared an image of the offensive receipt on Twitter.

He is said to be friends with the woman who was the subject of the slur.

He wrote: “A friend just received this bill from the white staff at London's happenstancebar.

“Absolutely crazy. The management showed no interest or accountability either.

“She was the sole black girl amongst a group of white girls, in a white bar. The staff's response: 'We don't know how that got there.' Sure.”

In its statement, Drake and Morgan, said: “We are appalled by the unacceptable behaviour of one of our waiting staff. He has been suspended from duty pending a full disciplinary,” it said.

“We have contacted two members of the group that were at The Happenstance yesterday afternoon and have apologised unequivocally.”

The Happenstance describes itself as offering an “all-day Modern European menu in industrial-chic setting with deli, florist and St Paul's views”.
