2023 Blue Diamond field and barrier draw
The field has been declared and barrier draw completed for the 53rd edition of the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) which will be run at Sandown Lakeside on Saturday.
It’s just the second time Victoria’s premier two-year-old race won’t be run at Caulfield. In 1996, Paint won the race when it was held at Flemington.
This year a field of 16 plus two emergencies has been declared.
The runners consist of eight colts and eight fillies while the two emergencies are also fillies.
Father/son training team Anthony and Sam Freedman are chasing their third straight win in the race with their sole runner De Sonic Boom while Victoria’s premier stable of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace have two starters in the field – Veecee and Steel City.

Extreme Choice, who won the race in 2016, is the sire of two runners – the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Don Corleone and Extreme Threat, trained by Extreme Choice’s former trainer, Mick Price and his partner Michael Kent (Jnr).
Godolphin trainer James Cummings saddles up three of the starters – Barber, Zulfiqar and Exploring while 2017 winning trainer Ben Hayes, along with his training partner and brother JD Hayes have two runners Arkansaw Kid and Little Brose.
Victoria’s number one rider Jamie Kah is looking for her first win in a Blue Diamond and she partners Barber in the race.
Barber and Steel city headed up betting when the final field markets were published at around the $5 mark and they are expected to remain at the head of markets after drawing favourably.
